Ever heard the saying that we are doomed to repeat history if we do not learn from it? District 9, Peter Jacksons scifimentary (science fiction documentary), takes an introspective look on mankinds inability to be stop ourselves from repeating our history of abusing and subjugating those who we designate as different or the other. In this case, the other are aliens. Previously depicted in other films as evil, cunning and war like, Jackson takes artistic license by instead depicting them as peaceful simple creatures whose main focus is on seeking scavenging for food and surviving in their ramshackle shelters. When they inadvertently lose power to their spaceship over post-Apartheid Johannesburg, the aliens find themselves put into a temporary camp until a long-term solution is found. Ten years later, tensions are high and the temporary camp is now cordoned off from the rest of the citizens of the city by barbed wire while plans for moving the aliens even further away begin as orchestrated by the government agency dedicated to controlling the alien problem .

Comedy is not for everyone, and as an avid movie-goer, I certainly understand that. Yet, a new form of movies have emerged which provide a comedic look at what are otherwise dramatic situations, i.e. situational comedies. Some of new situational comedies are much more than what they appear to be on the surface. Such a comedy is Judd Apatows new offering, Funny People. In this situational comedy, Apatow chronicles what may be the unfunniest topic ever, i.e. death, and in doing so, shows his skill as a master story taker by doing just what he sets out to do: make an inventive and enthralling situational comedy.

I decided to check out the movie Hostel during lunch today. Actually, I had decided it about 3 weeks ago. For some strange reason I just can"t get enough of Quentin Tarantino. He did not write or direct this film, but he is the presenter of it. This is just a fancy way of him saying "I put my stamp of approval on this flick." That"s good enough for me, QT! I caught the 12:20 showing at the Park Terrace 6. There were only 3 other people in the theatre, probably QT "fanboys" like myself. There were a lot of previews. You can show up 15 minutes late and not miss a thing! So what"s this movie about" I"m going to do my best to explain without spoiling anything for you.
