I visited the Cedar Street Tavern for dinner with a friend last Monday. I have driven by this place many times, yet never been. This is a small restaurant/bar located at 120 North Cedar Street on the corner of 5th and Cedar. It is right beside Post Gateway Place, and the new Johnson and Wales building.
When I first walked in, I was completely taken aback by the décor. You see the bar, and it looks like an "alcohol tree" (just look at the photo, you will understand) and the counter zig zags around so people can face each other. The ceiling and walls are painted to look like the night sky, and there are backlit pin holes everywhere, so it looks like real stars. The bartender told me it was a "state of the art fiber optic ceiling with shooting stars". Really neat layout though, reminded me of a coffeeshop in Amsterdam.
We were seated right away in a booth. It was not too crowded but I assume this has to do with it being a Monday evening. As I perused the menu, I saw a lot of the standard "pub grub" (Nachos, Quesadillas, Chicken Wings, etc.), but noticed they had some upscale dishes as well. Some of these were a 12oz New York Strip, Southwestern Salmon, and Parmesan Chicken. I had a late lunch so I was looking for something light. I first decided to get the BBQ Sandwich, but found they use ketchup base. When it comes to BBQ, for me it"s either vinegar base (also known as Lexington Style) or nothing at all. I opted to go with the Turkey Club, and my culinary cohort went with the BBQ. The meal arrived in a timely fashion, and I had no complaints. Everything was hot, fresh, and tasty. My friend vouches for the BBQ for any of you ketchup base people out there. Overall from a restaurant POV, I give my visit an A.
This place is definitely a great place for drinks. The bar is easily accessible, and they have a great special for every night of the week. A few examples are 2$ Miller Lites on Monday, and 3$ Smirnoff and Red Bulls on Saturday! (great deal!!!) They also have half price appetizers Mon-Fri. Cedar Street Tavern also features NFL Sunday Ticket and ESPN Game Plan for football on Sunday, cozy booth seating, eight TVs, fireplace, and a patio area.
Charlotte has a lot of neat "neighborhood" taverns in the area, and CNL is glad to welcome Cedar Street Tavern among those ranks.
