I decided to check out the movie Hostel during lunch today. Actually, I had decided it about 3 weeks ago. For some strange reason I just can"t get enough of Quentin Tarantino. He did not write or direct this film, but he is the presenter of it. This is just a fancy way of him saying "I put my stamp of approval on this flick." That"s good enough for me, QT! I caught the 12:20 showing at the Park Terrace 6. There were only 3 other people in the theatre, probably QT "fanboys" like myself. There were a lot of previews. You can show up 15 minutes late and not miss a thing! So what"s this movie about" I"m going to do my best to explain without spoiling anything for you.
The first 40 minutes of the film could have been summed up in a 3 minute montage, but that does not mean it was boring. The two main characters are Americans who are visiting Amsterdam. The first act consists of these two ripping bongs, banging hookers, and checking out the club scene with their new buddy from Iceland. These three stay out way too late partying, and get locked out of their hostel. This causes them to meet a Czech guy who invites them over to his place. This is where they hear about a wonderful hostel in Slovakia full of wild women. 3 seconds later it cuts to a shot of the three on a Slovakia bound train. When they arrive, it"s just as it was described. Within an hour of arrival they are invited to a spa full of beautiful, naked women. It turns out this place is a trap for tourists set by a company who indulge the fantasies of crazy rich people. Now begins the horror part of the movie.
I don"t want to ruin it for you, but it gets pretty extreme! It will shock and scare you! You may find yourself looking away more than once. Horror fans will appreciate that there are no "cheap" scares in the film. (i.e. a cat jumping out, or a character being startled by another character) The tension builds right up to the end, and explodes with a very satisfying and vengeful conclusion. Again this is an extremely graphic and brutal film. It received the R rating due to "brutal scenes of torture and violence." If you are a film freak like I am, look out for the Takashi Miike cameo! If you don"t know who Miike is" run to the Blockbuster and rent Ichi the Killer, IMMEDIATLEY!
Overall I liked this film, but think it could have been better. Less time could have been spent on the romp in Amsterdam, and more time developing the structure, organization, and background of this "evil" company. I forecast a 90% chance of a sequel, prequel, or spin-off.
My rating: B+
