I sure like good BBQ! I was introduced to Mac"s on South Blvd a little under a year ago. After finishing my first meal there, the thought that immediately came to my mind was, "Thank God I don"t have to eat at Sonny"s ever again!!" I then ended up moving within a mile of the place back in November, and I have eaten there over 100 times since. This review is 100% genuine, and was not paid for. Mac"s didn"t even know I was going to write it, much less even know who I am. Since a certain other in the CNL hierarchy seems to have forgotten what it means to be "real", I figure I will pick up the slack with this and future reviews. If you live in the Charlotte standard metropolitan statistical area, appreciate great BBQ, and have not heard of Mac"s Speed Shop" YOU NEED TO GET WITH IT! They literally serve the best BBQ in a 50 mile radius. Mac"s is located at 2511 South Blvd, in the historic Southend district. It"s really hard to miss because it has the old Red Star Tavern"s big, neon, red star above the entrance. I inquired as to how that came to be, but was told that it was "top secret". You also can"t miss the assortment of Harley Davidson"s, and custom choppers usually parked by the door. Mac"s is a haven for motorcycle enthusiasts. Every Wednesday night is Bike Night, and they even have a Euro Bike Night every 2nd Tuesday of the month. They have the DAC lyrics, "Where the Bikers stare at the Cowboys, who laugh at the Hippies, who are praying they will get out alive", painted on the wall. The waitresses have shirts that say "A Sunny Place for Shady People." Some of you may be wondering, "How do you eat at a place like that." Very easily I say, because it"s actually quite a nice place. I know nothing about motorcycles, would probably look quite silly riding one, yet I feel totally at home eating at Mac"s. To directly quote their website: "Mac"s is all about hot bikes, hot barbecue, and cold beer. From my point of view in respect to the food; Mac"s is about a lot more than just barbecue. They are also about buffalo wings, macaroni and cheese, and hush puppies! Mac"s is the HOLY GRAIL of hush puppies! I believe that they are the best on the planet Earth. I"ve had many a hush puppies in my day, and nothing holds a candle to what Mac"s is serving! The mac" and cheese is top notch. It"s the baked kind with layers of cheese melted on top" my favorite! Last but not least, The BBQ! Saying that it is excellent would be quite the understatement. I always get a pulled pork sandwich, either the "Lil Pig" or the "Big Pig" depending on how hungry I am. The pork is always juicy and tender, and I would have no problem eating it plain. That however would be blasphemy because the sauce is to die for! My favorite is their traditional pork sauce which is a blend of mustard, vinegar, and other secret ingredients. They also have "Po Po"s Red" which is a sweeter sauce that is equally as good. Most of the time I go with straight pork sauce, occasionally I like to mix it with Po Po"s Red. I love this stuff so much, that I have never been able to try anything else on the menu. They have a variety of other things such as seafood, burgers, brisket, and ribs. You an check their whole menu here: Mac"s Full Menu Now for the Beer!! And Mac"s surely has that department covered! Mac"s have over 150 unique choices of beer. They have a cooler stocked with so many different beers, it"s a bit surreal. Many of their selections I have never heard of! For example, Jack Whacker and Delirium Tremens were two that I was unfamiliar with. I love beer, but I am from an expert connoisseur. Those of you who fit that description will be in "Beer Heaven." They even have a "High Octane" category, which clearly warns that these brews were made for sipping! They have a stout called Gulden Draak Triple that has an alcohol volume of 10.5% That"s almost TRIPLE the average beer! I am going to close with the overall sum of my experiences, which can be described with one word: EXCELLENT! The staff at Mac"s is awesome! When I eat in, I usually sit at the bar and am waited on by Jimmy or Casey. When I am with a group of people and get a table, Shelley has been our waitress many times. The service has always been fast and professional. I don"t think I have ever waited longer than 5 minutes for my food to arrive. In fact, I had to stop calling in my "To Go" orders because they are so fast! If you"re wondering if I"ve ever had any negative experiences at Mac"s, the short answer is "Yes". I believe one time they forgot my sauce in a To Go order, and another time some of the pork in my sandwich was a bit dried out". THAT"S IT! Those two instances were separate and don"t exactly equal a entirely negative experience. So out of 100 visits, 98 of them were perfect, and 2 were 80 percent positive. Overall, that is a 99.6% rate of 100% satisfaction! Considering the number of visits I have made, that"s quite an accomplishment. It was also the catalyst for this article. If you are serious about bikes, barbecue, beer, or any combination of the three" Mac"s is the place for you!
