There is a lot to be said for familiarity. “This is my home! ” “They’re awesome!! What a party band!” “They make me want to shake it all night long” “He is the best player this side East of the Mississippi!!” “I love this bar!” “If they play one more tune like that one, I am dancing on that darn pole!!!!” That’s what folks were saying last night, as Baby Fat continued to swiftly arouse it’s crowd and fire up a homey little place I love called Art’s Bar & Grill. Even though they continued to play body rocking songs I assure you this writer refrained and no pole dancing was done - this night. Art’s, tucked away along the palmetto-lined rows decorating Coleman Blvd, is not your “typical” Mt. Pleasant bar. It is not uppity or flashy or fancy. It’s just a very welcoming little joint that people love to call “home”. It’s a place with a unique CHARM that draws people back, again and again. On most Friday nights, you will find owner/operator, Kent, sitting on his stool by the door, waiting to welcome you with a warm sincere smile. The lights of Art’s Tiki-like outdoor patio seem to call my name every time I am close by. Once inside, you’re easily swept-up by the casual, friendly atmosphere and delights of delicious food and fantastic live music. You will always find a smile, a hug, a good time here. Friday nights at Art’s are always rockin’ and last night was no exception!! As Baby Fat takes the stage, there is NEVER a minute that their excellent music does not hypnotize the patrons. As if holding a magic wand, “Viola!”, Baby Fat turns this bar into thee most energetic booty-shakin’ dance floor, well…..“this side East of the Mississippi!!!” I have followed the wonderful (individual) music of these guys from the spring-time acoustics on the Wild Wing patio…to the very first time I believe I saw a few of them grace God’s stage, while visiting a local-area church. Sadly, I wasn’t around to experience the Charleston music scene of the 90’s that I have heard so much about. However, it is quite refreshing to know that the musical revolution in this town continues to grow wilder, overflowing in true art, even now, a decade later. The guitar driven rock lit up the night as couples grooved to the magic they heard. Being a long-time guitar-enthusiast, there’s no place I would rather have been then being bounced around and banged into as I sat on my stool next to the dance floor. I guess what I like most about Baby Fat is that they are… so funny!! That makes a true entertainer: creativity and wit. Jack Sprott’s vocal ability, rhythmic guitar and yes, humor, sets the pace for non-stop fun. Bassist Marcus the Music Man gets the joint jumpin’ with his unique stylin’!! Former Frogmoores banger, Jeff Mangans was there on drums, while his normal band leader, Rik Cribb (of The Problems, SQZBXX ) makes us proud—while working his tail off in the Middle East. (Wait, a minute, did I just call Rik Cribb…normal"") Sorry Rik..and we miss you much!! Now, the ooh’s and ahh’s continue with regular “special guest appearances” by the oh-so talented and extremely comical Jeff Bateman on lead guitar (formerly of 90’s Charleston music phenom The Frogmoores). Jeff’‘s talent always seems to amaze me more each time I see him again. The thing is, it doesn"t even look like work as his fingers glide over that thing"it"s just natural! A gentleman"s testimonial above regarding the Mississippi just may be an understatement: My professional opinion is that Bateman is the best guitarist in the South…and perhaps, in ALL directions beyond. We must not forget another incredible string-“god”, joining in for 3 songs was none other than John “Johnny Cocktails” Melnick (ex-Big Black Building). So as you may imagine, our little “home away from home” was more packed with talent last night then an overly-tanned ripply washboard out on Folly Beach. I love dance floors big and small. If you have not yet visited Art’s or come out to experience the cool vibes of Baby Fat, may I recommend loosening that tie (you know it’s uncomfortable anyway)....and throwing those high heels in the backseat, grabbing your favorite thongs (the shoes, I mean) and heading on out to see what all the talk’s about. But first, check out this video clip for a little teaser on guitar excellence. Jeff Bateman When it comes to a most excellent band like Baby Fat—and a place called Art’s—-I can best sum it up with an old Frogmoores song, when I say baby…You’re “The One”. This is Jaden Wylder and that’s your Wild Report for what’s cool in the Carolina NightLife!!!!!!
