I"ll bet when Charleston rockers, LESLIE, had their first gig at Mt. Pleasant’s Village Tavern in 2004, they had no idea the wild ride they were about to begin! Four years later, the trio (Sadler Vaden, Jason Fox, Jonathan Carman) seems to be one of the busiest out there. Between touring, recording, writing new material, staying true to the Lowcountry and giving back to those around them, LESLIE surely has been a true musical leader, a driving force in moving towards change. This week, the band and about 35 of their extremely talented, versatile friends invite you to join them out at Village Tavern for a musical charity/concert event that they have aptly named “Move For A Change”. Beginning Tuesday, April 8 at 8pm and running through Saturday, April 12, these fun rockers will host a showcase of musical talent for several really great charitable causes. Each night the band will entertain, along with at least one other local act and the occasional surprise guest. The five-night long charity show will raise proceeds and awareness to Ronald McDonald House, Lowcountry Food Bank, American Red Cross, Lowcountry Environmental Education Project and Pet Helpers. ALL SHOWS ARE FREE!!!!!!! Donations are accepted. In addition to the delight of Rock, Blues, Country and Southern Rock tunes, the event will feature raffles and drink specials each night. Prizes vary—With special thanks to all the local restaurants, bars, touring companies, salons, stores and other retailers who’ve jumped in to help, there should be something cool for everyone. Drink specials will be $1.00 off each night, proceeds to charity. As a Lowcountry Music Journalist here for the past 4 years, I can promise you this: ALL of the artists stepping on to Village Tavern stage will be some of the best musicians you’ve seen here!!! Won"t you please come out and join me in supporting them" Here"s a partial list of performers (not including surprise guests): The Working Title, All Get Out, Lindsay Holler & Dirty Kids, Crowfield, Steven Fiore, Owen Beverly, Cary Ann Hearst & Gun Street Girls, Firework Show, Red Handed, Jay Clifford, Action City Blackout and many more!!!!!! Sooooo…..what makes a hard-rockin", road-trippin", pond-water-shots-a-shootin", joke-crackin’-music-lovin", big-ole-hearted bunch like this tick" Lucky me. I think I"ve got a partial answer for you"The rest, well you will just have to come and find out!! Singer/Guitarist/Songwriter Sadler Vaden was kind enough to break from an already packed schedule to talk with me this evening. Vaden, who was right in the middle of a band practice/rehearsal when I called (and who was also an hour away from cracking the mic for Local X with Amy Hutto on 98X) showed me how very much his heart is in this. I mean, WHO stops for an interview with a schedule like that"" Well, a man who is not only talented but has a great appreciation for those around him"That’s who….and a man who you definitely DO NOT want to miss this week! We talked about the other wonderful artists, their comradery, the long history with the Village Tavern, and the very meaningful motivation for using their music to promote awareness to the causes. Here’s a portion of my talk with LESLIE’s Sadler Vaden: JW: So, Sadler, what exactly is the meaning behind “Move For A Change”" SV: “Move For A Change” is actually taken from a song that I wrote and we will perform.” (The song is a Bluesie little number that reflects his personal feelings on change.) He continued, “I have always been not so concerned with politics. Not sticking my nose in where it doesn’t belong. But I am concerned with the youth of America. We want to offer an escape by opening up an alternative to what they see and hear (on media).” JW: Wow, how cool. So this event is all about change for the better, education of all that"s out there to be discovered, shaking our booties…as well as donating to several causes in support of that. What a fantastic and honorable idea. JW: I love the choice of venue. An industry friend who I highly respect once told me that he felt the Tavern is the very best place in town to see talented people performing original music. Please tell me a little about your history with Village Tavern" Why there" SV: “That’s where it began (for LESLIE). We played one of our first shows and where we did the 5-song EP” JW: (kidding, blonde moment) : Ohhhh, so the EP was recorded “Live from the Village Tavern"” SV: “No, actually we recorded it in a shed.” (A….SHED" I don’t think he was kidding, either) “Village Tavern is where we held our CD release party.” JW: I have watched your You-Tube video (road trip to a Pittsburgh gig) a few times. You guys are absolutely HILARIOUS!!! Is that what we can expect as far as showmanship and personality of the other bands, too" SV: “Some of the bands, we are meeting for the first time. We all have a really great comradery. We (LESLIE) are a bunch of jokers. We are not pranksters or anything…but we are jokers. We like to get each other all fired up!” JW: I love it!! So, what else are you guys up to" SV: “We have an acoustic night lined up. We are doing a canned food drive on Wed night…..and…we are having a blood drive at the College of Charleston on Wed 10am-3pm (at Stern Student Center). JW: Busy busy guys…Thanks so much for doing this!!! I can’t wait to be a part of it. Lastly, can you tell me what inspired y’all to put this event together" SV: “Well, it was our manager Josh Terry"s idea. Originally, we wanted to organize some sort of outdoor party or festival. For various reasons, that became difficult to do. We are about to do a new record. We have some new material to share and we thought this was a good way to do something for charity”. JW: I am really looking forward to it. This is a really wonderful thing you’re doing. SV: “Last year, after my mom passed away, we did a show at the Music Farm to help me and my sister. That really did help us. This is our way of giving something back, doing something in return for the community.” I think Mr. Vaden"s mom would be real proud. This is one event that I hope everyone out there -reading this- will support in any way you can. Let"s all join together, have a good time and help out these fine charities and wonderful artists. And let’s find out what LESLIE means when they say, “We are gonna get smhamerred!!” I can’t wait. This is Jaden Wylder and THAT"s your Wild Report for what"s cool and very worthwhile in the Carolina NightLife. *******The Village Tavern is located at 1055 Johnnie Dodds Blvd, Mt Pleasant. 843/884-6311 For more information on the all of the talent, the charities and anything relating to Move For A Change, please visit: http://www.myspace.com/moveforachange http://www.myspace.com/leslierock http://www.lesliemusic.com
