Charleston, SC "January 4, 2009- Crew Carolina LLC, the managing company for the Boathouse Restaurants, Carolina"s Restaurant, Carolina Catering and Simply Southern Products is announcing a strategic realignment of assets. The company which recently acquired a property, the former Mimi"s Restaurant, at 1241 Harbor View Road on James Island is setting an opening date of February 17th for the Boathouse on Ellis Creek. Crew Carolina also announces the closing of the Boathouse on East Bay effective this date.
"This is all about taking a close look at our overall business structure and how, given the times, to best come out of this recession as a stronger company overall," according to Batt Humphreys, communications director for Crew Carolina. "Ellis Creek provided a unique opportunity, even in a tough economy, to return to the business model that has been successful for Crew Carolina since Day One. For us, Breach Inlet defines that model, the space, established traffic and a waterfront view that helps enhance the enjoyment of our "Simply Fresh Seafood"."
"Like many locals I have always loved Mimi"s, particularly the location and the creek side and marsh views. The Duffy sisters, Mimi and Mo, did a great job. It has always reminded me of Breach Inlet," according to Richard Stoney owner of Crew Carolina, "It has a neighborhood feel, it fits in with the setting and fits well with the customers who have come to appreciate a restaurant that feels like their own. Keeping that feel is very important to us."
The new Boathouse on Ellis Creek will feature many of the Boathouse menu favorites, still focusing on the "Simply Fresh Seafood" menu that brings local seafood entrees to the table. "But we"re looking at several new items," says Stoney, "The menu will focus on "family friendly" items, and in these times, prices."
The Boathouse on East Bay will end service after nearly ten years of operation. The restaurant opened in 1999 following her sister restaurant at Breach Inlet.
"We are making every effort to offer opportunities to the employees at East Bay," says Stoney. " Our people there are like family, some have been with us since the early days. We understand the impact and want to do everything possible for those who have worked so hard, for so long."
"These two actions are separate and unrelated," says Stoney," We contracted over two months ago to purchase Mimi"s. However, in the last 30 days, several factors, the most important being interest by outside parties for the property prompted us to close East Bay."
"These are times that require open eyes and to seize the opportunities when they present themselves. There are positive areas of growth in the Charleston market," according to Humphreys. Crew Carolina"s off site catering division Carolina Catering has more than tripled in business in the past year, partly due to exclusive arrangements with key venues like Magnolia Plantation and the Gibbes Museum. "We are adding strategic alliances with new venues, Memminger Auditorium, 14 George Street, the SC Aquarium and the Confederate Home among others. We are seeing a very strong 2009 in the events business. In spite of the economy, one sector that seems recession proof at present is the wedding industry. Charleston remains a very strong destination."
