There are those people out in the world who are known solely as "rockers". Then again, there are some who are known as "country-fied". The only difference is the genre, but what brings them together" Sure enough, it"s the music. Charleston is known for its variety of rock bands such as Neverthaless, Control Freak, Numb 909, On The Hunt, Sin County, and countless others; and of course there are bands that perform a wide variety of music like Oasis Band, Whiskey and Perfume, and NRG. With such a large following for solid country music in the Lowcountry, one would think that there was a band that based their set list solely on that genre. Well, there is. In my full one year of being on the staff with CarolinaNightlife.com, there is one band that eluded me that I just could NEVER catch a show to. I had heard so many rave reviews from people that I"ve met, that I just knew I had to see what these boys were all about. The Mason Dixon Band is a group that definitely covers the country music genre with flair. They carry themselves with that style that just says, "I Love Country Music" and they do it well; from the tops of their cowboy hats to the bottom of their boots. And yeah, they make those hats look GOOD. The five members of the Mason Dixon Band have over 100 years combined of musical talent and expertise. Frontman Roddy Akers has been performing since he was 5 years old over on James Island and he"s very good at belting out the tunes from such artists as Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, and Luke Bryan. Up next is JR McLeod, lead guitarist. A self-taught guitar player, whose other talents include backup vocals and the banjo. Along side JR, is rhythm guitarist Keith Clayton. Keith is the newest member of Mason Dixon Band and brings a talent that only he can describe as "unique" when reunited with his brother, Kevin. On the other side of the stage is Phillip Humbert, bassist. Another Charleston native and also self-taught musically, starting with the violin; known in most country music circles as the "fiddle". Backing up the entire band is drummer Kevin Clayton. Yep"that"s Keith"s brother. His rhythm on the drums brings the heart of the band alive with its own beat. The band has performed all over the Lowcountry from Folly Beach all the way up to Moncks Corner and everywhere in between. Along with cover music, the band has been working on some of their own original music. That "GRITS" song is just cool as all getout! Yes, I"ll admit it"I"m "country-fied" right down to my cowgirl boots. So, for those who just can"t get enough of country music on the radio; make sure you catch The Mason Dixon Band live one night. You will come to enjoy their music just as much as I have and if you truly like what you hear, make sure to support the band by purchasing a t-shirt or bandana from them. You can even join their fan club by signing up at a show or get information on their website at http://www.masondixonbandsc.com.
