On the hot and humid afternoon of June 6th, the chrome sparkled and the engines thundered in the parking lot. The riders and their passengers were ready, as was this photographer. It was my first motorcycle run, and I was excited. I was just a passenger with camera in hand. My pilot was James "Doc" Brooks. At 11:30, the first group of riders left Sand Shack Bar & Grill and headed to their first top at Minky"s Social Club way out on Highway 17A. What a quaint club out in the middle of nowhere. The staff was friendly and the beers were certainly COLD! Before long, we were joined by the other two groups and the parking lot was packed with bikes. Upon leaving Minky"s, we headed up 17A into Summerville. The motorcycles roared through downtown. While sitting at a stop light by Azalea Square, several of the staff from Shoney"s were out on the corner watching as we went by and waved to the riders. The next stop was Ivory Tiger Tattoo Shop on 17A beside The Kountry Klub. Nice little shop where several friends have gotten inked. Remember the labels on music CDs that states "Parental ADVISORY: Explicit Lyrics"" There"s a nice sign right in the middle of the door to Ivory Tiger in that same graphics scheme that states: "Parental ADVISORY: Explicit Images". Good idea for those who love to get inked and have children. Roaring to life and getting back on the road, we were bound for Fat Boyz Hog & Grog up in Moncks Corner. On the way, a rider"s bike broke down. Several others stopped to make sure he and his bike were okay. It was at that point that I realized just how much comradery existed among riders. The whole center lane was surrounded with bikes. How cool is that" Arrival at Fat Boyz was met with friendliness. A very spacious venue with loads and loads of room. Lots of pool tables, a huge band stage that had equipment sprawled everywhere and a LOOONG bar where everyone would have room to order up their favorite drinks. Then, the fun began. We started down Highway 52 to our next stop, Sapphire"s in Goose Creek. That"s when we "Put it in the wind" so to speak. We were flying down the highway doing close to 85, but SHHHH!! Don"t tell my police friends. They would berate me for being on a bike going that fast! I must admit, there"s something to that "freedom of the road" that I"ve heard many bikers talk about. We arrived at Sapphire"s, our 4th stop on the run. A nice atmosphere on the inside with booths to sit in with your friends and enjoy the music coming from the jukebox. While there, the sprinkles that had threatened the entire day finally came down, even though it was just enough to make the ants on the ground mad. Payback for all the ant bites everyone gets! HA! The next stop on our list was Exotic Impressions, an occult and body piercing shop in Otranto Plaza. Talk about some BEAUTIFUL items in there! The sword collection alone was impressive. Several riders decided while there to get piercings. The shop carries a little bit of everything from incense, swords, crystalline fairies, custom t-shirt designs, Pagan and Wiccan supplies to body piercing bars of every size imaginable and even offers custom designed signs for any occasion. Definitely a place I will visit again and again. Back to Sand Shack we went! Our final stop on the run and where the after-party began. Everyone turned in their sheets from the run and started chowing down on food from the wonderful buffet set out by the staff. While winding down from the ride, people enjoyed listening to music played by Koastal Karaoke & DJ Services. Even before the live entertainment, everyone was tapping hands and feet to the beat. Now, why would people go through all this" It was a benefit to remember a close and dear friend lost to an automobile accident back on April 16th. 39 year old Myles Dunn lost his life when his Expedition was in an accident on Ladson Road and flipped end over end four times, killing him instantly. Myles was a regular patron at Sand Shack and an avid motorcycle rider. His best friend, Laine Thee Goddess of Rock, of 98X fame, organized the entire benefit with the help of Sand Shack owners Carolyn and Paul, and his mom, Jillian; his girlfriend Stephanie; and friends Melissa and Heather, from his Phi Theta Kappa family. The all-day benefit included a jump castle with jousting sticks and a dunk tank full of water all from 514-JUMP. Crossroads Leather and Indian Wind Creations set up vendor spots out in the Tiki Lounge area. Rowdy Nites, of WEZL and Q104.5 fame, was the emcee for the event while live entertainment was provided by local bands "Control Freak" and "NRG". Majority of food items on the buffet were donated from area companies including Sonic and Xtreme Mobile Music. In between sets from the band and when the bands changed out equipment, prizes were given away via raffle tickets and included two framed Jim Booth prints, a heavy fuzzy blanket with motorcycles on it, and many many t-shirts, gift certificates, goody bags, and hats. Also during these times, people could go outside and play around in the jousting pit or take a chance at dunking Joel, Brandy, and Jenn of Sand Shack staff or anyone else who wanted to take a chance at NOT getting dunked! As if THAT wasn"t going to happen! HAHA! By the end of the evening, the benefit was a success. Over $2000 was raised to benefit Myles" family in his burial expenses and to also send some students to summer school, who otherwise wouldn"t have had a chance and fallen behind their peers in education. Myles would have been proud since he championed education while holding the regional chapter presidency of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society in most 2-year colleges. Everyone had a great time. "Nuff Said!
