Mark Farina is a name many entrenched in the EDM community have been familiar with for quite some time. His Mushroom Jazz series has been sited by many as high up on their list of favorite downtempo/house compilation(s) year after year. For his sixth release CarolinaNightlife.com’s Desiree Kane got the chance to interview Mark and got some fantastic, candid responses. Check it out!
What's the sweatiest venue you've ever played at?
Smart Bar in Chicago @ DJ Heather’s birthday. Walls and ceilings were sweating, I lost 10 lbs.
What one genre of music do you like that people would be most surprised by?
Polka.
What is the #1 most played song in your music library at this very moment?
D-t3ch - UTC (Hoodfellas Remix)
Where is the most random place you've heard your music being played?
The bathroom of a fine restaurant in London.
Tater tots or crinkle cut fries?
Crinkle cut fries.
Pirates or Ninjas?
Pirates.
Downy Wrinkle Releaser or traditional iron?
Bounce.
Shorts: Above the knee or below?
Below.
What can we look forward to from you for the rest of 2009?
New releases on my Great Lakes Audio label. A monthly podcast and constant touring through new year
What's the one airport you never wish to see the inside of again?
Sao Paulo Congonhas (CGH)
Which airport do you not mind spending time in at all?
Terminal 5 @ Heathrow or the Portland Airport which has a cool Nike store inside.
Which has been your most favorite Mushroom Jazz to make and why?
Mushroom Jazz 1 because its always about your first.
What is your most useful item at a gig that doesn't involve music?
Flashlight.
Your sound has evolved a lot. Do you feel like you've lost people along the way because they're loyal to a certain sound of yours or do you feel it's something that makes you a more diverse, eclectic artist that will draw people closer?
Combo of both. Seems fans have stuck with the two sides of my musical personality. The music still has the same principles as it always did. Chunky drums, groovy bass, nice samples and great melodies.
You've been to Charlotte, NC multiple times. What's your favorite place in Charlotte to go on your off-time that doesn't involve a club?
The Record Exchange
Do you ever miss or long for a more regular life that doesn't involve such extensive travel? Why?
For now, NO. At some point in the future staying in one place will have its time, but I’m not ready to hang up the headphones and start my lawn bowling and horticulture classes just yet.
What wisdom have you acquired on your journey that you wish you'd had when you started?
Enjoy every place you are at and don’t think about what you are going to do when you come back because you may never return.
You've got an album called "Air Farina" on Om Recordings which makes me wonder, do you ever wish you had a pair of Nike Airs named after you?
That’s where the idea for the album first came from.
