I don't know if it was the NC State vs Gamecocks game (Gamecocks won 7-3) or the Charleston Singles Club event last night, but it was packed last night at Halls Chophouse.
The little bar downstairs at Halls was shoulder to shoulder with well dressed Charleston socialites last night. Cocktail waitresses were bustling around with plates of sizzling steaks while Crown Royal Reserve promotional girls gave out free shots of fairly pricey whisky normally.
I was impressed with the space. It was homey and welcoming. Nothing overdone, nothing underdone. Very elegant with still that laid back Charleston touch. If it is one thing I hate about big corporate steakhouses is their inability to make it quaint and personal. Granted, last night was over crowded but I wasn't eating so it didn't bother me as much. The upstairs dining area is where most people who were eating escaped the crowd of downstairs.
The bar was well stocked and the bartenders were quick to sling drinks even when the bar was three deep with patrons howling drink orders every other second. Price for a Red Bull & Vodka was modest. I was surprised my tab was not out of control after 5 cocktails.
Probably most impressed by the owners. It is rare to see owners take such care in their business to personally greet each guest at the door, introduce themselves, learn your name and ask what they can do for you. I think three different Hall family members introduced themselves to me!
All and all, Halls is a great pick for a nice dinner. They make you feel welcome and at home.
SIDE NOTE: I did hear from a source that Ruth Chris' Steak House was looking for space in downtown Charleston. However, if I know Charleston correctly, this isn't the place where locals would support a corporate chain over a locally owned and operated business. Charleston people like their local flavor...
