This suspense filled drama took my breath away. Where most movie plots are entirely predictable, this cannot be said of The Perfect Getaway. With more twists and turns than the path taken by the newlywed main characters during their honeymoon hike to an idyllic location, you are left guessing until the last second.
This story of two unsuspecting newlyweds whose honeymoon places them on a collision path with death took me entirely by surprise because honestly my expectations were low. Where I was expecting the standard fare of obvious clues leading me to point out the killer within the first couple of frames of the film, there was a barrage of information which had me second guessing my own prediction to the very end. The standard who the killer is question became more of a question of who couldnt be the killer; ultimately, this bodes well for the type of well-written script that keeps you on the edge of your seat and which is as far from predictable as possible. While some movies just hit the highlights as one dimensional characters run rampant, this movie slowly gives you the details that allow you to care not only about who did it but why while crafting multi-dimensional characters you come to care about, especially when they are put in harms way. As the end of the movie approaches, flashbacks are adeptly used to reveal details that shed a completely different light on the entire movie.
Perhaps the secret to this excellent movie is that the script is chillingly written so that two interpretations are possible. Once the movie comes to an end and you have all the facts in front of you, you realize that you were oblivious to the shocking truth depicted right before your eyes, and instead, you only saw what you expected to see. Using character stereotypes and innate biases we all hold, you are led on a goose chase worthy of such masters as Hitchcock.
The challenge in writing this review is that I cannot really tell you much without cluing you into the genius of the movie. Yet, suffice it to say that despite the high movie prices, this movie is worth every dime. In fact, if you only see one movie this summer, definitely choose this one: you wont regret it.
