All around Charlotte, men keep getting asked the question, "Why the beard?" No, it's not because of a superstition in hopes that the Panthers may make it to the playoffs. And they're not getting ready for a cold winter, either. These men are growing their beards for a CAUSE.
The beards are all the result of an idea that started on a cocktail napkin one Sunday afternoon in NoDa over two years ago. Founders of Beards BeCAUSE, Jared Yerg and Scott Doerr, wanted to come up with a fun and successful way to raise awareness about a serious issue - domestic violence. Their idea? Have men give up their razors and grow their beards, a symbol of masculinity, in support of battered women and their families. In this third year of Beards BeCAUSE, almost 100 people have put down their razors and took out their wallets in support of the CAUSE. And we can't forget that behind every great man is an even better woman. The razorless men are not alone in their fight against domestic violence - they're accompanied by the Bearded Ladies! These ladies are just as motivated as the Growers to spread the word on domestic violence and will do everything short of growing a full beard to do so. However, I have a feeling that if they could grow a beard for the CAUSE, they totally would.
This past Friday while at their "5 O'clock Shadow Party," I discovered that this group definitely likes to party almost as much as they like to give up their razors and raise money! The event, which was held at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, featured live music from Finnegan Bell and Darnell Woodies. But the fun doesn't stop there. On November 18th, join the growers at Old Mecklenburg Brewery for "Beards and Brews." Then, the men will finally get their razors back at the same place where they first put them down nine weeks earlier, at Amos' Southend on December 5. Rumor has it that this "Finale Party" always proves to be one of the best parties of the year in Charlotte. I plan to be the judge of that - who's coming with me?
