On Monday, Dec. 7, Mez at the Epicentre will host a fundraising event for the Community Culinary School of Charlotte (CCSC) from 5 to 8 p.m. that includes drinks and light bites, a silent auction and raffle. Auction items up for grabs include hotel stays at some of the city’s premier destinations and private catered dinners by the CCSC staff. Raffle prizes include rounds of golf at Cedarwood Country Club, cooking classes and kitchen equipment. The admission price for the event is only $25 and includes food and beverages.
Because the fundraising event is underwritten by the International Food Service Executive Association, all proceeds will benefit CCSC, which provides underemployed adults with culinary training while supporting the area’s underprivileged residents with in-home meal delivery. Call 704-375-4500 for tickets.
“As a restaurant professional, I know how important it is to find employees that are well-versed in culinary procedures,” says Mez partner Nasser Razmyar. “The Community Culinary School of Charlotte is a great resource for Charlotte’s restaurant community and we are happy to provide the venue for a fun event that will support their mission to empower people with the skills they need for success in the restaurant industry.”
The stories of those who find themselves unemployed or underemployed are varied, but empowered with the help they need, most individuals can rewrite their own endings and become productive members of the workforce. The CCSC meets the needs of underemployed adults, and the local culinary community by training motivated individuals as culinarians. Part of the training process includes preparing meals for Friendship Trays, a program that provides home-bound citizens with nutritious meals. The CCSC also features the revenue-generating Encore Catering, a full-service company that helps to sustain the school while providing a work environment for students and alumni. The school is a private, not-for-profit organization, and training and job search assistance are provided to qualified individuals in exchange for their commitment to supporting the programs and initiatives of the CCSC. Notable alumni include Anthony Watkins, head chef of the Capital Grille and Sybil Durant, manager of the Friendship Tray kitchen.
Voted Best New Restaurant and Bar by Charlotte Magazine in 2009, Mez is a contemporary dining experience that entertains the palate with global fare from Chef Klime Kovaceski. The restaurant is located at 210 East Trade Street in Charlotte and serves lunch and dinner daily. For more information, visit www.mezcharlotte.com.
