Greenville, North Carolina - April 15, 2010 - Here at CNL we appreciate all that city regulations and law enforcement does to ensure our safety while having the times of our lives. With that said we find it highly disappointing that the City of Greenville has chosen to act in a way that prohibits the 5th Annual Riverwalk Block Party from occurring this year. Carolina Night Life Staff and hundreds of other excited party goers have been anticipating this years event, live music, and good times almost from the moment last year's party ended.
According to a Facebook update released by the people organizing this years event the party met its undoing because
"The city has denied the permits after delaying our request for two weeks. Then brought in the head of the ALE and a rep from the school with the help of the police to waste our time when a simple no would have sufficed. I am sorry but if we cant close the street and have noise permits we cannot do the event. Also we were told to hire police for the event would take half the force to ensure the "safety" of everyone and that we could be charged with 200 counts of misdemeanors for supplying alcohol."
Well that would be the end all of that idea. It would appear that even when college students take the proper steps to maintain in the laws and rules of the city and uphold the safety regulations set by our superiors we are still told no. While we are certain there are good reasons on the behalf of the police, ALE, and school for shutting down the plans for the event, was there truly no way to reach a compromise between the two parties?
We are all adults now and know the price to pay for drinking underage. So what if there were ALE there picking out the unfortunate freshmen? That is the same risk kids take when going downtown underage in that kind of environment.
It makes one wonder if the school is pushing this as another example of changing the outlook the nation has upon the local college. While we are all for increasing the schools reputation for academics, this will not be reached by trying to remove the subculture of 'college partying' altogether. We will just have a school that is not as fun with the same academics.
So stop these attempts such as "reorganizing downtown", shutting down annual block parties, increasing police presence on Halloween, and now the rumored shutting down the late night bus system. Work on increasing that actually academics in the school system more. People who are not here to both work hard and play hard will not stay around very long if you do.
The Riverwalk kids are still optimistic looking at the bright side of things with the comment announcing the end of Riverwalk Block Parties.
"like all good things like reggae on the lake which this party has been in honor of the city shuts it down.... It would have been one hell of a party but it is canceled and there is nothing that can be done. Thank you to all the bands who were going to come and all the people who helped me start this event." We now leave it to the next generation of party throwers to follow in the footsteps of the alumni before them to create an excellent time while maintaining to city rules and codes.
There have been rumors of a 'flash mob' party on the same day floating around in the air. While these remain rumors as of now and have yet to see any substantial organization or structure, remember you risk the well being of the same people who worked so hard to organize and create this event for your enjoyment if you do so at Riverwalk. The city will enforce an example against someone and they would be the easiest target. Please keep this in mind.
