Cheers to a new restaurant and bar coming to the University area! Taco Mac, with its extensive variety of world class beers, buffalo wings, southwestern food, and burgers, will be adding a new hot spot to the city. The success of the South Park location has created the need to expand to other parts of the city. For the students of UNC-Charlotte and other residents, this is great news. A fresh, fun sports bar scene is just what the growing campus desires. Adding an additional hang out spot to the all ready established favorites, Boardwalk Billy’s, Flying Saucer, Wild Wing Café and Bad Dog’s, is needed, especially for those who constantly find it hard to even get a drink at these busy bars.

According to the Taco Mac website, the restaurant was established in 1979. The owners, originally from Buffalo, NY, stopped in Atlanta, GA and decided they wanted to bring northern cuisine down to the South. As this idea was forming they ran across “a tiny taco shack,” named Taco Mac, which they realized would be their first restaurant location. The only problem was how they would use their limited funds: renovate the kitchen or change the sign out front. Renovating the kitchen was chosen as the more important improvement. From then on, the name Taco Mac stuck and brought a unique and memorable aspect to the new restaurant.

Taco Mac Brewniversity:

Similar to Flying Saucer, there is a program you can join at Taco Mac to broaden your knowledge of different types of beers. First of all, becoming a member of the Brewniversity is completely free! Each person becomes a Pledge after 13 beers and can advance to become the Brewniversity Chancellor after drinking a thousand different beers. Along the way to becoming the Chancellor, there are prizes at 11 different levels of beer drinking achievement. Prizes include shirts, a mug, an embroidered Polo shirt, a jacket, an engraved name plate and more. Also, bonuses from $10 to $100 are rewarded to your Brewniversity membership card at different levels.

Taco Mac’s New Home:

The new Taco Mac will be located on University Center Blvd. in the building which used to be the old Texas Land & Cattle Steak House. This will be only eight minutes from UNC Charlotte and only about five minutes from Boardwalk Billy’s, Bad Dogs and other popular bars. It will be opening in May and will be 7,000 square feet. With the close, convenient location, great food and exciting beer options, Taco Mac will be welcomed to its new home with open arms.
