2011 Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Charleston
Dust off your sombrero and order up a Corona. The 5th Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration is not far away! This year's celebration will be held at the at The Charleston Visitors Center Bus shed between Anne and John Streets in Charleston, SC on Thursday, May 5, 2011 from 7 11 pm. Around 3,000 people are expected to attend the Charleston Cinco de Mayo Festival, which was founded in 2006, and takes place annually on or near Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May). May 5th marks the victory of the Mexican army over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. In the United States, this day has become a celebration known as "Cinco de Mayo", a time to commemorate Mexican heritage and culture, and allow Charleston residents to experience Hispanic food, music, dancing and other aspects of Hispanic culture.
The mission of the Charleston Cinco de Mayo Festival is to encourage commonality and alliance between the diverse communities in the Charleston area. It also seeks to promote awareness and support of the Ryan White HIV Care Program at Roper St. Francis Healthcare, with a portion of the proceeds will benefiting the Ryan White HIV Care Program.
An abundance of entertainment will be enjoyed. Live Latin music will be provided by talented musicians and Djs, including: Orquesta Mayor, a group comprised of 12 professional musicians with diverse backgrounds; Orquesta GarDel, a six piece salsa band; Taton Y Tremendo, a Reggaeton group; and dance tunes by DJ Luigi Bravo of Latin Groove (http://www.latingroovecharleston.com). Professional dancing will be presented by Buen Ache & Estilo 6, serving up some professional Salsa performances. While enjoying the entertainment, sip on a margarita or Cervesa while sampling some authentic Mexican cuisine by vendors including, Pollo Tropical and El Bohio, will be available for purchase (cash only).
Free salsa lessons will be given throughout the night, with sign-up required at registration. Attendees may also enter the Amateur Salsa Competition. All couples will dance together for 2 songs, and the judges will choose a winning couple. The winners will receive a package including a $200 cash prize and additional prizes.
You may purchase tickets to the event online and save mucho dinero. The ticket prices include discounts for various groups and is as follows: $10 online; $15 at the door; $5 OFF if you wear a sombrero; $3 OFF with a college or military ID; kids 12 and under get in FREE. So grab your sombrero and get a deal!
