I like to drink. I like to go out. Im kinda cheap.
I hate covers. I hate waiting for a bathroom. I hate waiting for a drink. I hate big crowds in small places. I hate driving a long distance, certainly, if Im going to drink.
Im not a native Charlottean. But who really is anymore? I think Im fairly intelligent and fairly cultured. Im not a meathead. Im not the most personable with strangers.
Im married. Im almost 30. No kids. Im also a teacher.
So,
Uptown is not for me.
South Charlotte/Pineville is not for me.
There are a lot of bars that fit my personality, before dark. Happy hours are great. Sitting on the patios. Being able to lounge, hear my friends, and enjoy conversation. Dressed up working people. Coworker friends out after a shitty day at the office. Not blackout, throwing up on themselves, wasted.
But after dark, my choices are limited. I live near Woodlawn. Basically north South Charlotte. So I have many options of bars. But very few that are go-to. And ones that I can enjoy late into the night.
I will start with a good one. Duckworths Grill and Taphouse.
They specialize in pretty good food and a really good beer selection.
The atmosphere is bar. But its light. You walk in and theres hightop tables and one giant long table where many can sit. Seven or eight big screen tvs tuned to whatever game is on. Then to the left you have several booths, more tvs and more tables to sit in the dining room.
Duckworths has the best cheesesteak Ive found in Charlotte. A little pricy for the large. Great bread. Great steak. Its offered Original style with the cheese and the onions. How it should be. No mayo, lettuce or tomatoes. But you can get the works if you must.
The clientele is mixed and I like that. Coworkers in ties. A dad with his soccer kids. Cute couples sitting next to each other. Boys enjoying their team. And a literal booklet of the beers they have on draft and in the bottle at every table. With prices, alcohol percentage, taste and region which is always nice!
Its loud, but not too loud. People having fun and enjoying their beer. Or half-priced bottles of wine on Friday, which the wife likes! Smells of good food. But its comfortable. Never a cover. Never a line in the bathroom. Sometimes a wait for a table. But never a fight with boisterous Steelers fans forgetting theyre not in Pittsburgh anymore.
The unruly crowds, the just-legal age, the frat boys with the short shorts and croakies, and the girls looking to impress them are at Angry Ales or Braswells just down the street.
